Your employees are your greatest resource so, of course, you want to take care of them. Please share these winter safety tips with your staff during the winter season’s safety discussions.

Winter Safety Tips

  • Clothing
Wear warm, waterproof clothing in layers to help regulate your body temperature and stay comfortable in changing conditions.

  • Footwear
Choose insulated and waterproof boots with good traction to prevent slips and falls on snow and ice.

  • Exposure
Cover exposed skin, paying special attention to extremities – hands, feet, and ears are especially susceptible to frostbite.

  • Awareness
Be aware of your surroundings and watch for icy patches, snowdrifts, overhanging snow, leaning or fallen trees, downed power lines, and other hazards.

  • Slow Down
Take your time when walking or working in winter conditions.

  • Hydrate
Drink plenty of water – low humidity often accompanies Colorado’s cold, and you can become dehydrated without realizing it.

  • Rest
Get plenty of rest to avoid fatigue, which can increase your risk of accidents and susceptibility to illness.

  • Prevention
Take precautions such as frequent handwashing to avoid exposure to illness, and stay home if you’re sick.

  • Vehicles
Allow your vehicle to warm up before driving, clear snow and ice from all windows and mirrors, and keep windshield washer fluid reservoirs filled.

  • Emergency Kit
Carry a winter survival kit that includes a blanket, extra clothing, food, water, jumper cables/charger, flashlight, extra batteries, and a power bank for your phone.

  • Walkways
Keep all walkways, stairs, and entrances clear of snow and ice.

  • Entrance Mats
Place ice-resistant mats at entrances to help prevent slips and falls.

  • Heaters
Keep space heaters away from flammable materials and never leave them unattended.

  • Procedures
Follow all safety procedures and guidelines provided by your employer.

  • Hazards
Report hazards and any unsafe conditions to your supervisor immediately.
